What you have here is, I hope, a best of both worlds, offering: Video & text copy. Same subject, different approach. Equally important conclusion. Because, “When you know the cause of something, you can adjust your thoughts, emotions & actions to make the best of the situation.” Knowing the #1 Cause of Death for people in our business enables you to do things differently— and that would be a good thing. Enjoy them both.
Remember this playful dirge from elementary school (you can sing along if you do):
“Pray for the dead and the dead will pray for you.”
Do NOT put yourself in this picture, unless…
I offer that bit & pic above just to get you in the mood. What I’m “speaking” about here is the #1 (okay, and #2) cause of death in Network Marketing. Here’s the backstory.
It’s been a while since I spoke with Michael S. Clouse. We are friends and colleagues of long standing. I hired Michael to be Editor-in-Chief of Upline way back. I admire the way the man’s mind (and heart) works and I flat-out consider Michael to be THE best “platform speaker” in this business. He’s entertaining & educational in the extreme. I admire his ability as a presenter, because he’s full of useful & valuable content AND he’s funny, engaging, & memorable.
So, Michael & I are catching up on this & that and he launches into describing a “research” project that he’s been doing which will eventually lead into an audio program or a book or… something.
What fascinated me most about our conversation was how the results of Michael’s investigation confirmed something(s) I’ve been convinced of for two decades, but didn’t have “proof” of the truth. Now, I do. Here’s the deal.
One evening, Michael was uncharacteristically engaging in the pursuit of mindless entertainment in front of the television. He was watching one of the CSI programs; CSI Miami, CSI New York, CSI Altoona… and he just noticed how all of those programs always included an autopsy as an integral part of the process & plot. And he wondered…
Anytime a death occurs and it’s even remotely possible that the cause was something other than all “natural,” they do an autopsy. Well… (Can you feel the wheels in Michael’s mind starting to spin?) Network Marketers die every day— thousands of them.
And given what a remarkable business model we have here— one that truly allows any and everyone who applies him or her self even just a little to succeed…
And given that a great many of those dead bodies were once alive & well and had even started successfully building their businesses…
What’s up with that?
What’s the cause of such and so many “unnatural” deaths in Network Marketing.
Detective Clouse set out to find out.
He called a variety of successful leaders he knew and had worked with from a cross-section of companies and asked if they’d provide him with the names and numbers of men and women who’d once been succeeding at some level, but for now were dead and gone from the business.
Then he called those people, introduced himself and explained what he was up to and with their agreement Michael asked them a series of questions he had prepared and recorded their answers.
What he learned was fascinating.
THE #1 cause of death was…
Someone in the “former” Networker’s life— a person of power & influence— had convinced them that Network Marketing was “a bad idea.”
That was the beginning of their end.
“A bad idea” was translated into a variety of different expressions: “A dumb idea… won’t/can’t work… was beneath them… it’s a pyramid scheme… he or she was a fool for even thinking about it…” and on it went.
You’ve heard them before. We all have. Point is, the Networker in question BELIEVED it was “a bad idea” and whether he or she died on the spot or suffered a lingering demise slipping into a coma over weeks and months, the outcome was the same. DOA, whenever the A (Arrival) actually occurred.
In the beginning of the conversation, Michael asked me to guess what the #1 cause of death was. I answered “belief.” Turns out, that was right.
The #2 cause is also most interesting. “Nobody told them what to do.” And I’ll add Tom Schreiter’s continuation of that line to complete it fully, “… and what to say.”
So, there you have it. The #1 Cause of Death for Network Marketers is the belief— instilled by a person of influence, most probably a family member (like my then 18 year-old daughter who talked me out of a silver-gray Mercedes into a black one, which I have always regretted) or a trusted/respected friend or adviser— that Network Marketing is “a bad idea.” That it won’t work (for them). And/or… they’d be a fool to get or be involved.
The viability and efficacy of preventative medicine is now an undisputed fact of life and health.
It’s Time… we began to practice similar measures to prevent the premature and unnatural death of (should be successful) Network Marketers all around the world.
As I am fond of saying,
What the mind believes you will achieve— always and in all ways.

Great article John and so true that people allow ‘others’ to steer their lives and usually away from their dreams, really sad actually.
#2 doesn’t surprise me so much, most realize that they need to share their opportunity and products with others but few are taught the actual skills they need to succeed and in a growing sales resistant society it can be tough if not impossible with the right skill set.
Love the way you write, always a pleasure to read and encourages me to do better and to try to write better myself.
“Dream, Believe, Become…”
John,
I believe this is more complicated. While the majority who quit may quit out of peer pressure, I found long ago that those who were afraid to share with friends and family are not good prospects. The Law of Association applies here and those that quickly buckle to their peer group were never going to succeed in the first place. Until you have managed a level of success on your own block going on the road is not going to work.
While peer pressure may be the largest excuse people have for failure and it is the same story for people who go off to a ‘clinic’ for drugs, alcohol and a numerous other issues, who get their souls back only to return home and discover their environment is dedicated to their failure. The recidivism rate is again 95%… Most people need to change their entire environment to have a shot at success…And wherever you go there you are.
Network marketing is a relationship, person to person business and if the immediate influence circle has the power to keep you addicted to stuff that kills you how can anyone expect it will do any better for ‘normal’ people who just want to succeed. Like crabs in a bucket, no one gets out because someone always pulls you back in.
There is another group who also fit the \’belief\’ mode who quit. They have all the skills, the money and the drive. They are in the right place at the right time and they build fast. After 3-8 months they quit and often take dozens with them in the process.
They quit because it takes that long to figure out how long and exactly what it will take to have the dream come true. They are unwilling to pay the price. This is not just true for MLM but those going through all the trouble to secure a real estate license or a dozen different insurance and financial product licenses. The number of people who get a license who do not renew it their second year is 95%. They do not return to insurance or real estate. It took getting on the bicycle, riding it and in some cases with distinction and success for them to discover it was NOT what they wanted or thought it was going to be.
Success at MLM is a life commitment. Not a two or three year sprint to millionaire [and especially two or three months] … When you get that and discover the superstars are celebrity entertainers in every way, work five to six nights every week, take only a couple days off from their business a year while spending three weeks out of every month working for their downline it is a wonder only 95% don’t make it. Yes the ones who succeed don’t seem to notice all the time they put in because it is not work for them. If your dream is more time with your family, flexible work hours that lets you stay at home while only ‘working’ 15 hours a week…. You are in for one rude awakening.
John, for nearly 30 years my favorite and most common salutation has been …. Always and all ways. As in go make a difference always and all ways … you’re in my thoughts always and all ways … Wonder what ‘stream’ we were on 30 years ago?
“Until you have managed a level of success on your own block going on the road is not going to work.”
Agreed and… what do you use to help/teach people how to accomplish that?
Thanks Michael. As always, good & great stuff from you.
I appreciate you.
Thanks Tracey. I appreciate that & you!
